Getting Started

Websites, Domain Names, IP Addresses, DNS, Nameservers, URL Forwarding, ... arrgh... when you first decide you want to get on the web it can be very daunting. Don't worry, that's were we come in. At wrcdomains, we aim to make your experience as simple as possible and flatten out the learning curve. Getting on the web is as easy as 1-2-3.

1 Register Your Domain Name

This is where it all starts. A Domain Name (also known as an 'Internet Name', 'Web Name' or just a 'Domain') is your unique home on the internet. Domain Names are granted through registration, which gives you the legal right to use the name for as long as you maintain the registration - like a licence or lease. As no two people can own the same name, they can be very valuable, so early registration is advised - even if you are not sure what you want to do with it yet!

Why Register a Domain Name?
Many people register Domain Names for their businesses, for their children or other family members, for clubs and societies, for special events like weddings, for promotions and product launches, or sometimes just as an investment. At wrcdomains we offer one of the most advanced self service registration systems in the world - putting you in total control - and registration at exceptional prices. All domain names are registered in your name, not ours, and there are no hidden fees or tricks (unlike many 'budget' registrars).

DNS and Parking
As part of the Domain Name Registration process, you will be asked to supply two Nameservers for the registration. Nameservers (also known as 'DNS') are the internet equivalent of a phone book - they tell your computer where it can find your Domain Name's physical home on the internet.

For customers who are not ready to move onto step 2 and actually use their domain name, we offer a free 'parking' service. Your domain name will be automatically parked on nameservers provided by us, and your domain name will be redirected to a 'coming soon' page. There is no charge for parking your domain - so perfect for those registering domain names for the future or as an investment.

step2Get your Domain Name Hosted

Ok, so now you have got your Domain Name registered - and parked for free - so what can you actually do with it? Well, in order to get services like a website and email for your domain name, you need to find a 'web host'.

Free Hosting
Some ISPs and 'free' (advertising based) web hosts will allocate you some email addresses and web space under their domain name. If you choose to use this type of web hosting, you will usually end up with a long website address like 'www.geocities.com/something23/index1.htm' and an email address like 'john@something23.freeserve.co.uk'. Don't worry, if you choose to use this sort of web hosting you can still use your Domain Name - our URL Forwarding and Email Forwarding Services will allow you to reach your web space and email address(es) using your domain name!

Full Hosting
Many people prefer the added flexibility (and no adverts!) of full web hosting. With full web hosting, your website address is simply your Domain Name - i.e. 'www.yourdomain.com'. Plans and options vary depending on the web host and plan you choose, but generally you'll get an amount of web space and a number of customisable email addresses for your Domain Name - so you can send and receive email as 'you@yourdomainname.com'. With Full Hosting there are usually many extra options available, including web site stats, virus filtering, autoresponders, webmail and more... We have teamed up with our sister site, wrchosting to offer our customers an easy to use hosting package.

Transfer of DNS vs Domain Transfer
When you choose full web hosting, you will be asked by your new web host to change the nameservers listed against your domain name to those of your Web Host. This is known as a 'transfer of DNS' or 'release of DNS', and allows them to provide the hosting services. However, it is not necessary to transfer your entire Domain Registration to them - known as a 'transfer of registrar' or 'domain transfer'.

Be Aware: Some less reputable web hosts will try and convince you to also do a transfer of registrar - or even make it a condition of service - so they can offset their 'cheap' hosting costs with overpriced Domain Registration fees.

step3 Build your website

These days you don't need to be a professional website designer to create a decent looking website. As with all new things though, the more you can learn, the more options become available to you and the greater flexibility you get to create a site that is tailored exactly to you needs. Here are some of the available options for creating the perfect site.

Online WebSite Builder
For the beginner, an online website builder is usually recommended. These generally allow you to choose from a number of pre-defined website templates and insert your own text and/or graphics. Many full web hosts provide an online website builder with their plans. We have teamed up with our sister site, wrchosting to offer our customers a powerful yet easy to use package - why not try a FREE 30 day trial of SiteXpress.

PC Web Design Software
For those who have outgrown an online website builder, a PC Application is recommended. If you have MS Office on your PC, you can use Microsoft Word to layout your pages and save them as 'Web Pages' (or 'HTML' in some versions). However, those who are serious about designing their website should look at dedicated Web Design Software. There are a number to packages to choose from on the market, and some key ones are listed below:

  • Microsoft FrontPage (suitable for Beginners and Intermediates. More info...)
  • Macromedia Contribute (suitable for Beginners and up. More info...)
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver (suitable for Intermediates and up. More info...)
  • Abobe GoLive (suitable for Intermediates and up. More info...)

These programs give you a lot more flexibility in the design of your pages, but you may find it useful to learn the basics of HTML (HyperText Markup Language - the stuff web pages are made of!) - so why not start your training by reviewing some of the tutorials in the wrc Resource Centre, or picking up a recommended book from the library.
