  • Whilst humans find Domain Names easy to remember, the computers on the internet prefer to talk in numbers, known as IP Addresses. Every machine (or 'host') on the internet has a unique IP address, which you can think of as the machine's phone number.

A Nameserver, also known as a DNS (Domain Name System) Server, holds a list of known domain names and the IP address associated with them ('DNS Records'). A Nameserver therefore acts like a phone book, allowing your computer to look up the IP Address of the machine at the domain you requested. The 'DNS records' on the Nameserver can also help route email for your domain.

Every domain registered on the internet must be associated with (at least) two nameservers which are considered authorative for that domain. Don't worry, when you register your name we will automatically 'park' it on our default nameservers until you need it.
