A domain name is an organisation or person's unique home on the internet. It signifies an area of jurisdiction, and ownership of a domain is granted through registration.
Domain Names were created to help organise the internet into logical groupings, and to avoid people having to remember the numerical ip addresses assigned to computers (or servers) on the internet.
There are a number of internationally recognised 'Top Level Domains' (TLDs) - COM, NET, ORG, INFO, and BIZ are examples of global TLDs, and WS, TV, CC, BZ, NU, and UK are examples of Country Code TLDs. All domains registered by individuals or businesses must be part of a Top Level Domain.
For example, our domain name is wrcdomains.com, which is part of the COM TLD, and we can group together all our servers and services in to this domain which is exclusively under our control.
Domains Names are also referred to as 'Domains', 'internet names' or 'web names'.
